Shel was a terrific person. I knew him well at Mumford and have only the best memories of him. Plus we often played baseball together and he was damn good!

Sheldon was frequently described as a “mensch of all mensches” by those who knew him for his kind heart, and exemplary commitment to community service and those in need, in both in the Jewish community and beyond. He was truly a wonderful man who exuded character, humility, confidence, intelligence, a tireless work ethic and compassion.

Sheldon was the Founding Executive Director of the Garden of Remembrance.

He was a past president of: the Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA), Mobile Medical Car, Leadership Montgomery, B'nai Israel Congregation and the Treasure Oak Community Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of: The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, Washington Adventist Hospital and Save A Child's Heart. He served on the Advisory Board of the Clarksburg Community Hospital and the Advisory Council of the Jewish Social Service Agency.

He served as co-Chair of JCRC’s Maryland Commission and received JCRC’s 2017 Community Leadership Award.

The multitude of titles Sheldon held and awards he received doesn’t come close to describing the major positive impact he had on the community: a true leaders’ leader.

Sheldon worked over a long career at the U.S. House of Representatives, the Office of Economic Opportunity, the University of Maryland School of Social Work, for Sassafras (a local clothing chain), a trade association in Alexandria and for the System Development Corporation.

His passing leaves a sense of pain in the hearts of all of us individually and collectively as a community. May Sheldon’s name always be for a blessing and may the bereaved be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
